On the 2009 Chevy HHR, the P0013 and P0014 are pointing to a problem with the Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid (aka “Variable Valve Timing Solenoid”). These are actually fairly common fail items. They tend to get clogged and fail. The solenoid is located on the top, passenger’s side of the engine. Exhaust side is the one closest to the rear of the engine. Inspect the electrical connector and wire harness for any loose, broken or damaged wires. If no problems are found, most commonly, the solenoid will need to be replaced.
The variable valve timing (VVT) is the process of altering the timing of a valve lift event. This is done to improve performance, fuel economy or emissions.
