On the 2008 Chevy Malibu, the P0451 is a very straight forward code that points to a problem with the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor. This sensor plays a major role in the EVAP (emissions control) System. So when faulty, it will throw off other parts/sensors in the system, which can produce a fuel smell. These are actually very common GM vehicle fail items. The FTP sensor is located at the top of the fuel tank, mounted to the top of the fuel pump assembly. To gain access, the fuel tank will need to be removed from the vehicle. Carefully inspect the electrical connector and wire harness for any loose, broken or damaged wires. If no problems are found, replacing the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor should solve the problem.
