On the 2008 Chevy Equinox, the C0550 is a very straight forward code pointing to a problem with the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM). There are a couple of variations on this code and will result with a 2-digit code after the C0550. In any case, the most common problem is an internal failure of the EBCM. This is very similar to a hard drive crash on your home computer. The EBCM is located under the hood, in the driver’s side rear corner of the engine compartment, just below and to the right of the Brake Master Cylinder. Carefully inspect the electrical connector and wire harness for any loose, broken or damaged wires. If the visual inspection checks ok, most commonly, the EBCM has failed and will need to be replaced. Keep in mind, after replacing the EBCM, it will need to be programmed to the vehicle. This will require the use of a scan-tool that can interact with control modules. This usually requires the use of a higher-end scan-tool. Most personal hand-held “code readers” cannot perform this function.
