On the 2004 Toyota 4Runner, when the “MAINT” light comes on, this is the reminder that it is time to change the engine oil and filter. When you drive for about 8000 km (5000 miles) after engine oil replacement, this light flashes for about 3 seconds and then about 12 seconds with the ignition key is turned to “ON” position. If you continue driving without engine oil replacement, and if the driving range exceeds 12000 km (7500 miles), the light will come on after the ignition key is turned to “ON” position. The light will remain on thereafter.
If the light is flashing, we recommend that you replace the engine oil at an early opportunity depending on the driving and road condition. If the light comes on, replace it as soon as possible.
Once you have replaced the engine oil and filter, the light will need to be reset MANUALLY. This is to ensure that the actual oil change schedule is in sync with the reminder light. If the engine oil was recently replaced, there’s a strong chance the light was not reset. You can reset the light using this procedure:
-Turn the ignition key to the “ACC” position or “LOCK” position with the Odometer reading shown.
-Turn the ignition key to the “ON” position while holding down the trip meter reset button.
